Motokubo Manufacturing Co., Ltd.
This case study introduces an improvement in heavy-load handling of gears and other components using the Flex Arm. Motokubo Manufacturing Co., Ltd., based in Fukuyama City, Hiroshima Prefecture, specializes in the design and fabrication of machine tools and custom machinery, as well as various metal processing, gear machining, and grinding.
With an extensive track record of deliveries to automobile manufacturers, industrial machinery manufacturers, and parts processors, they possess a wealth of experience and advanced technical capabilities spanning from design through machining and assembly. As part of their efforts to prevent injuries and accidents and achieve a safe working environment, they had been using hoists and cranes extensively, but were looking into assist devices that are easier to operate.
Challenges

Manual loading of workpieces into machines was required
With the addition of new machines in a factory without hoists, workpieces had to be transported manually. In addition to the burden of handling heavy loads, post-machining products were wet with oil, posing challenges in both safety and efficiency.
Reason for Adoption

The Flex Arm enables easy operation even for inexperienced users
As one improvement measure to achieve a better workplace environment, they had been considering the introduction of an assist device for over 10 years. Prompted by the product catalog, they experienced an actual demo unit at the trading company and appreciated that anyone could operate it intuitively. The lower initial cost compared to hoists was also a key factor. The customer also praised the installation support provided by CKD and the trading company representatives as extremely helpful.
*Note: Normally the panel does not have a cover, but a custom cover was provided because the machining environment produces mist.
Effects After Introduction

Stabilized loading operations and improved work efficiency
The Flex Arm supports the workpiece weight, reducing physical strain on the operator's lower back, shoulders, and other areas. Gentle raising and lowering using the pendant enables transport without damaging workpieces or surrounding equipment. Post-machining products wet with oil can be transported with minimal contact, and the introduction of the FAW prevents contamination and rust caused by handling workpieces by hand, saving time. With a turning radius of 2.5 m, a vertical stroke of 1.5 m, and arm rotation up to 320°, a single unit covers the entire work area, contributing to labor savings.
Going forward, the company plans to pursue further efficiency improvements through robotics and process-consolidating machinery. They also expressed expectations for CKD to expand its lineup of products that make handling and transport easier, and we will continue working toward the realization of even better products.
